Use It or Lose It Explained

What Does Use It Or Lose It Mean?

Around this time of year, it is common to hear “Use it or Lose it,” regarding medical benefits.  But, what does that actually mean?

We asked our Office Manager, Brandy Green, at our FLOSS – Oak Lawn location to help us better understand why dental benefits need to be used by the end of the year.

Brandy says, “Dental insurance companies typically provide annualized coverage up to a certain dollar value. Some patients do not realize they have unused benefits for the current year, and that they can schedule needed dental treatment that is covered by their insurance. Unfortunately, dental insurance is not carried over to the next year, so if you do not use it, you will lose it!”

Dental Benefit Confusion

If you are feeling confused about what your dental benefits provide, Brandy says, “As a courtesy to our patients, we call their insurance companies to get a summary of benefits which includes a detailed breakdown of their coverage, remaining benefits for the year, and what procedures are a covered. We then inform our patients of what benefits are provided for them. Patients love this about us, because we handle the work for them.” Don’t hesitate to call your FLOSS location and ask them to help you better understand your benefits.

No Dental Insurance- No Problem!

Many people who don’t have insurance at all are afraid of going to the dentist because of the cost.  Brandy says, *Not everyone benefits from having dental insurance. We provide options to help our patients afford the dental care they need.  Taking care of your dental health is an investment that benefits your overall health and we will provide you with different choices that fit your budget.”

At FLOSS, we treat you as a part of our family. We want you to understand your benefits and are happy to help you make the most of your insurance coverage.  With open enrollment coming up for most of our patients, please know that we are happy to help you evaluate your options relative to your treatment plan.
