Inadequate bone structure resulting from tooth extractions, injuries or gum disease can be repaired with bone grafts. The new bone is either obtained from a tissue bank or taken from your own tibia, hip or jaw. In the upper posterior jaw, sinus bone grafts can also be performed.

If needed, special membranes that dissolve under the gum can encourage regeneration of the bone and protect the bone graft. These instances are referred to as guided tissue regeneration or bone generation.

Defects of the jaws resulting from traumatic injuries, congenital defects or tumor surgical procedures are usually addressed with major bone grafts. Larger problems are repaired with the use of the patient’s own bone.

Depending on the size of the problem, the bone could be harvested from a variety of sites, including the hip, lateral knee and skull. Procedures of this nature normally take place in the OR and result in a hospital stay.
